ST. CLAIRSVILLE - An investigation is under way after a jewelry store in a local shopping mall was burglarized early this morning.
Belmont County Sheriff's deputies were on the scene at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville this morning after a reported break-in at King's Jewelry Store was discovered by a mall employee.
According to Joe Bell, director of corporate communications for the Cafaro Co., the burglary occurred some time after midnight. Bell said the jewelry store was the only business targeted and the perpetrator gained access to the mall interior and the jewelry store by breaking exterior glass panels. Bell did not know the total value of the stolen merchandise or the amount of damage to the property.
A mall maintenance worker first discovered the crime and dialed 911, while the mall manager was on the scene by 4 a.m.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting the sheriff's office in the investigation.
Calls to the Belmont County Sheriff's Office were not returned, while a representative from the Ohio BCI was not available for comment as press time.
No one was injured and the mall opened at 10 a.m., its regularly scheduled time.
