BRIDGEPORT - A 2-year-old girl was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at Wheeling Hospital, and the child's mother has been arrested by Belmont County sheriff's deputies in connection with her death.
Erin Virginia-Mae Bell of 68209 Commercial Drive, Bridgeport was being held Tuesday in the Belmont County Jail on a charge of voluntary manslaughter, according to authorities. Bond has been set at $20,000.
Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson said the autopsy report showed the cause of death as being blunt trauma to the head. The autopsy was performed in Morgantown.
Thompson said the toddler was taken to Wheeling Hospital at 1:30 a.m. Sunday from Lansing Garden Apartments in Wolfhurst, west of Bridgeport. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The body was later taken to Morgantown for an autopsy.
Dwayne Pielech of the Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services said his agency has taken custody of a 4-year-old sibling from the home.
Thompson said there were no prior problems reported with the family. Pielech said there were no previous reports of violence.
