WHEELING -- Wheeling's population has dropped more than 9 percent since 2000, new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate.
According to the official 2010 Census figures, released this afternoon for West Virginia's cities and counties, Wheeling's population is 28,486, down from 31,419 in 2000.
Ohio County has a current population of 44,443. In 2000, the county's population was 47,427.
Other local cities' 2010 population is as follows:
Weirton, 19,746, down 665 from the 20,411 posted in 2000;
Moundsville, 9,318, down 680 from the 9,998 posted in 2000;
New Martinsville, 5,366, down 618 from the 5,984 posted in 2000;
Follansbee, 2,986, down 129 from the 3,115 posted in 2000;
Wellsburg, 2,805, down 86 residents from the 2,891 recorded in 2000;
Paden City, 2,633, down 227 residents from the 2,860 posted in 2000;
Bethlehem, 2,499, down 152 from the 2,651 posted in 2000.
For local counties, Marshall County boasts a current population of 33,107; Hancock, 30,676; Brooke, 24,069; Wetzel, 16,583; and Tyler County, 9,208.
