Some things to think about on guns

April 12, 2011
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

This letter is in response to Dr. Ruben's letter March 27, "Battle Over Guns Continues."

First, the scenario regarding the basketball shootout is ludicrous and contrived. Florida has allowed non-concealed-carry for decades without any incidents coming close.

Second, legality of guns is actually contrary to victimization by criminals. For example, Mexico, with some of the world's strongest gun laws, has a violent murder rate double ours.

Third, his cited figures are very misleading. For example, think about his claim that "it is estimated that over 40 percent of gun acquisitions occur in the secondary market." Is black market another name for this secondary market? Are gun laws going to change that?

Fourth, there is a Constitutional and moral issue. A free people do not remain free without the means to defend themselves. For example, one can argue all they want that the fleet at Pearl Harbour would not have been bombed had there been no fleet, but at that time in history, is anyone really under the illusion that oceans were enough to prevent foreign aggression? Or doors with locks the aggression of robbers?

I won't even get into some of the Libertarian points our founding fathers based right to bear arms on.

Just some things to think about.
