I read with interest a few weeks ago on the front page of the Sunday paper about the Wheeling Rotary attempting to host a golf scramble to finish the Miracle League field. I am not a member of the Rotary or, until this article, not even aware of their projects.
I have been blessed with children and several grandchildren who have been gifted athletically and go to any ball field throughout the valley and display their talents. But what if I had a special needs family member? Where could they go? The Miracle Field is so close to becoming a reality.
I spoke with the lady in charge of the scramble and confirmed that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the construction of the field. I also discovered that if the Rotary is successful in their event, not only will ground be broken, but contractors are standing by and an actual game will be played this fall.
This is not a field only for Wheeling or Ohio County residents. Children from schools all over the OVAC with special needs will claim this as their home field.
For parents and grandparents who tuck their young one in at night and whisper a prayer of thanks to God that their offspring can play at all fields, I offer this challenge:
Review your finances and see if you can spare $50, $100, $500, $1,000 to see a totally miraculous ending to a three-year quest. Send a check to the Wheeling Rotary "Let's Finish the Field," c/o 31 View Street, Wheeling, WV 26003. If you have any questions, call Mary Fahey at 304-242-7099.
I will be sending mine.
