George Laase, former head baseball coach at Buckeye Local High School, always put his heart and soul into the game. He was recently removed from his position because three Board of Education members, who have probably never seen a high school baseball game, decided a change was needed. That decision is a real disservice to George, and to all students in the Buckeye Local School District.
My grandson was lucky enough to play for Buckeye Local, and later went on to play in college. He still feels he learned more about the game of baseball from Coach Laase than he did from his college coaches.
Won-loss records do not always measure a coach's ability or worth. Records can be skewed by many factors. The measure of a good coach has to be how his team reacts to him; whether the players learn the game; and whether the game is fun. Coach Laase meets all these criteria.
Is the firing then personal? I hope not. If the termination is personal, it will hurt not only Coach, but the entire school system.
Hey, Board: Step up to the plate and reinstate Coach. That is the best move you can make, and would surly be a "hit" in anyone's book.
