CONNORVILLE - Buckeye Local High School changed its cross country course this season.
It had little affect on the St. Clairsville Red Devils on Saturday morning.
Coach Tony Ciroli's squad swept the Buckeye 8 League Championships in convincing fashion, giving St. C. its third Buckeye 8 title in a 24-hour span as the cross country teams joined the golf team in the winners' circle.
The St. Clairsville boys have won every Buckeye 8 title that's been staged and did so again impressively, finishing with a miniscule 22 points. Indian Creek finished a distant second, accumulating 77 points. Harrison Central was third with 86 tallies.
The Red Devils girls, who've won the last six Buckeye 8 titles, finished with 25 points. Union Local's youthful Jets squad finish second with 55 points, while Indian Creek was third in the meet, which featured only four schools who had full teams.
The Red Devil boys rolled to the title thanks to a top-three finish.
Senior standout Andy Thornburg repeated his Buckeye 8 title in an impressive 16:46. Thornburg was a wire-to-wire leader and was never really challenged as evidenced by his nearly 34-second margin of victory.
Junior Drake Walker was second on the squad with a 17:22 and classmate Joey Davies was third overall in a time of 18:01.
Alex Timko and Phil Burdyn rounded out the scoring for the Red Devils. Timko was seventh in 18:45, while Burdyn posted a 19:33 to finish ninth.
Indian Creek's lone top-10 runner, junior Derek Demattio, who was eighth in 19:10.
Harrison Central had a pair of all-conference runners. Junior Robert Tipton turned in a time of 18:13 to finish fourth and senior Dakota Carpenter was 10th in 19:39.
Buckeye Local junior Chayse Staten was fifth overall in 18:18.
Union Local's lone all-league performer was sophomore Caleb Hayes, who toured the Connorville campus in a time of 18:37.
The Red Devils girls continued their domination of Buckeye 8 individual winners.
Junior Amy Castle picked up the individual title, posting a solid time of 20:02. Classmate Juliana Madzia was right on her heels, finishing just two seconds later.
St. Clairsville's normal third runner, Melanie Hannan, dropped out of the race because of an illness.
Senior Brooke Bosworth turned in a solid performance as the third Red Devil to cross. She ran the 3.1 mile course in 22:25.
Frosh Joanna Vincenzo was 12th overall and sophomore Terese Seamon was 16th to round out the scoring for St. C.
Martins Ferry, which doesn't field a full team, was led by talented junior Sunshine Wren, who ran a 20:39 to finish third overall.Freshman Jamie Truchan continued her strong early season, finishing fifth in 21:27, while sophomore Lindsay Cunningham was ninth in a time of 22:30.
Harrison Central senior Lauren Yoho was fourth in a time of 20:57.
Bellaire freshman Danielle Stoner was sixth overall in 21:52 and earned all-league honors.
Buckeye Local senior Leah Figurski was seventh overall in a time of 22:03 and Indian Creek freshman Addison Winland was 10th in 22:36.
