Cody Amos - Wheeling Park
Cody Amos ended his sophomore season at the state tournament the same way he ended his freshman year, as the state runner-up.
This year, he has his sights set on being a champion.
"Cody's goal this year is to be a state champ," Wheeling Park coach Sean Doyle said.
"I think for being a sophomore in the 160 pound weight class, he had a very successful season. I know he really wanted to be a state champion last year, and he didn't reach that desired goal."
Last season, Amos won his first OVAC title by defeating Martin Ferry's Mike Rose by pinning him in 1:30.
"As a freshman he ended the tournament in seventh place," Doyle said. "Last year, he had a really good tournament."
Amos also helped the Patriots finish eighth overall at the state tournament.
"Any time you have somebody achieving those types of things as a freshman and sophomore, it's an incredible thing. I think you need kids to achieve those accomplishments to show the younger kids you don't have to wait to be a junior or a senior to be a champion.
"Cody's such a competitor. He doesn't believe he should ever lose. This season he expects to go undefeated. And if he would be able to go undefeated, that would be an amazing feat because we have a national-caliber schedule. He just really wants to repeat as a OVAC champion as well as becoming a state champion."
