Veteran Librarian To Be Honored

An Open House Reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Monday at the Cameron Public Library to honor Mary Evelyn Garey for her 27 years of dedicated library service and to wish her a happy retirement.

Garey has been the Cameron librarian for the past 13 years, following 14 years at the Moundsville Library. Her last day will be Wednesday.

The public invited and light refreshments will be served.

The Cameron Library is located on the third floor of the Benedum Building, 44 Main Street.

Parents of Benwood youngsters 12 years of age and under are to sign their children up by Dec. 9 for a gift and Christmas goodies they will receive by attending the city's annual Children's Christmas Party on Dec. 18 in the St. James and St. John School gymnasium.

Signups will be taken during regular business hours at the city clerk's office, 430 Main Street.

Doors to the party will open at 1 p.m., with the event to begin at 2 p.m. Hot dogs and beverages will be served prior to the party, and there will be face painting for the children, among other activities. Santa will be there to distribute door prizes.

There will be drawings for bicycles in each of the age groups.

Mayor Edward M. Kuca, Jr., city council members, city employees, businesses and the residents in the community unite to make the event possible.

Several wreaths have been entered in a contest sponsored by the Marshall County Historical Society as part of "Christmas at the Farmstead."

The wreaths will be used as decorations at the Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale.

Three prizes of $25 each will be awarded to the winners in the three judging categories - business/civic, individual/family, and school group/youth club.

The winners will be determined through a voting contest. Votes begin 25 cents each and can be cast at the Farmstead or any of the registrants' locations.

The Cockayne Farmhouse will be open on Dec. 6 for walk-through and viewing of the decorations. That same day there will be caroling, hot chocolate and cookies available at the Cockayne Visitors Center next door to the Farmhouse. Also, select wreathes will be offered for sale and all proceeds will benefit the Cockayne Farmstead.

The annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Tree Gala Auction will be taking place Thursday evening at the Grave Creek Mound Museum.

Prior to the auction, the monthly Business After Hours event will take place, beginning at 5 p.m., hosted by WesBanco with Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, Moundsville, preparing the food.

The Tree Gala kicked off on Nov. 10 with a light-up event.

The John Marshall High School Band will be having their annual Christmas Cookie Sale from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday in the North Commons of the school.

Also, on Saturday, the annual Marshall County Fair Inc.-sponsored Christmas Craft Show will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Chesapeake Energy Building at the Fairgrounds.

Free meter parking will be available in Moundsville starting Monday and continuing through Dec. 31. The lone exception will be parking spots in the vicinity of the Marshall County Courthouse.

City council has been offering free parking in the business district for many years.

There will be two community tree lighting ceremonies taking place this week in Moundsville.

The annual Gold, Khourey and Turak Law Office outdoor tree ceremony will get underway at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, with Santa to arrive at 5 p.m. The tree is 45 feet high and is a permanent fixture on the front lawn of the Tomlinson Avenue office.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, lights on a 40-foot tree in the parking lot of BB&T will be turned on. This first-time effort is being headed up by the Moundsville Activities Committee, comprised mainly of businesses along Jefferson Avenue.

The Opus Music Club will be performing at both of the light-ups.

Friday at 6:30 p.m., the curtain will go up for a musical at the Strand Theatre. The musical is titled "A Tribute to Nat and Natalie Cole."

The city of Moundsville will again be sponsoring a house decorating contest, with residents who contact the city clerk's office, 304-845-3394, to register the homes to be judged

Registrants must submit their names, addresses and phone numbers by 4 p.m. on Dec. 7, with the judging to take place on Dec. 9.

Cash awards of $100, $50 and $25 will be presented.

Saturday is the deadline for making reservations for the Moundsville Lions Club Christmas Party, with the club's 70th anniversary also be observed.

The event will be Dec. 9 at the First Presbyterian Church.

Season passes for the Glen Dale Swimming Pool will remain on sale at reduced prices through Dec. 31. The passes can be obtained in the city clerk's office at the municipal building, 402 Wheeling Avenue.
