Zach Brown - Oak Glen

Last season, junior Zach Brown had a very successful season wrestling for the Oak Glen Golden Bears, finishing with an overall record of 37-2.

"Zach finished the season winning multiple individual titles, the most prestigious being an OVAC title in the 112-pound weight class," said Oak Glen coach Patrick McGillian, who assumed the team's coaching duties from Frank Crain this season.

Brown beat out River's Josh Bartrug in overtime by a final score of 4-2 at the Ron Mauck OVAC Tournament conducted at WesBanco Arena.

He also finished runner-up in the West Virginia, helping the Golden Bears finish the tournament at Huntington's Big Sandy Superstore Arena, fifth overall in Class AA-A

Brown fell in the championship round to Berkeley Springs' Ryan Diehl, who finished last season with an undefeated 50-0 record.

"Zach was a team captain last season, a great competitor, and is a strong piece to a great senior class of wrestlers," McGillian, an assistant coach last winter, said. "He succeeded in a leadership role last season and he continues to be positive influence on his teammates."

Brown comes into his senior season looking to win the state championship title after not only coming in second last year, but his sophomore year as well, falling to Diehl again, this time in the championship round of the 103 pound weight class.

"I expect Brown to continue to strive towards his goals, work hard every day, and continue being a reliable leader for this program," McGillian said.

Brown heads a excellent senior class of wrestlers for Oak Glen, including several returning state qualifiers. The Golden Bears are just two years removed from capturing their last state championship title, which was the school's record 13th consecutive crown under legendary mat mentor Larry Shaw.
