Wrestlers to Watch -- Shawn McGee, Steubenville

November 28, 2011
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Shawn McGee - Steubenville

After last season's state tournament didn't go as expected for Steubenville High School wrestler Shawn McGhee, he comes into his senior season with some high goals.

"He definetly wants to repeat as OVAC champ and wants to become the Top Gun champ and state champ," Big Red wrestling coach Mike Blackburn said.

"We have a lot of big matches this season and I think Shawn can definetly lead the team to some victories."

McGhee received his first OVAC title last year as he was able to beat Parkersburg South's Tyler Richards, 8-0. It was first appearance in the OVAC finals. He is a three-time OVAC placer, also finishing fourth (2009) and third (2010).

Even with posting an overall record of 37-3, McGhee lost in the first round of the state tournament to Ayoub Kirresh of Avon High School.

"The state tournament didn't go well as he wanted to, but that will push him harder this year," said Blackburn.

"I think as a wrestler, Shawn improved technique wise and had a great season last year.

"At OVACs, I think he had a complete tournament. He got things done and was dominate throughout. I think it showed him what he can do."

"He's definitely a big part of our team, being our captain and team leader as well as a returning state qualifier."
