WHEELING - After falling into an early 10-point hole, Wheeling Central used a tough defensive effort to turn the tables on sectional rival Weirton Madonna in the girls championship of the Undo's Ohio Valley Catholic Tournament Wednesday night.

All-tournament members Emily Bucon, Colleen McCormick and Cassie Sorge each reached double figures in scoring and the Maroon Knights limited the Blue Dons to just three field goals in the final 26:18 of the contest to record a convincing 49-31 victory at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University.

Madonna (5-2) dominated the opening quarter, using a 10-0 run midway through, and a pair of Lisa Parkins triples to build a 16-11 advantage after 8 minutes.

However, it was the Maroon Knights that got hot in the second quarter, both offensively and defensively. While holding the Blue Dons without a field goal in the quarter, Central used a 15-5 burst to take a 26-21 lead into the halftime locker room.

By the time Madonna finally dropped another shot through the net 14:41 had passed and a 16-7 lead had turned into a 30-24 deficit on a Kaitlyn Conner triple at 3:37 of the third.

In all the Dons missed 17 consecutive shots and scored just five points, all on free throws.

Central outscored Madonna by a 38-15 margin in the final three quarters of play with the Dons finishing a woeful 9 of 42 from the field.

Bucon had a game-high 14 points, McCormick finished with a double-double with 12 tallies and 10 rebounds and Sorge added 10. Senior Bri Robbins contributed 9 and also joined the all-tournament squad.

Parkins had a team-high seven for the Blue Dons while Conner and Sara Lyons made the all-tournament team.
