Shadyside Girls Surprise Wheeling Park

By RICH GIBSON , Martins Ferry Times Leader

SHADYSIDE - Meredith Dailer and her Wheeling Park Patriots are chalking this one up as a temporary setback.

Park entered Thursday night's rematch with Ohio small-school power Shadyside a perfect 10-0 but departed at 10-1 following a 60-56 victory by Tina Yates' equally talented ballclub.

Dailer's club had earlier secured a 59-49 conquest against the Tigers, but the tables were to be dramatically turned the second time around.

Tigers junior Karli Bonar made sure of that, dazzling Park with nothing short of a lights-out shooting display.

In the end, Shadyside needed each and every one of Bonar's nine 3-pointers and game-high 30-points to earn the victory.

"Playing games like this can only make you better," Dailer said. ''Yes, we're disappointed, but it's how you respond to losses and we'll be just fine, I'm confident.''

Moving to 8-2, the Tigers pulled off a near '180' in Thursday's rematch.

''We shot 16 of 62 (at Park). We definitely improved on that," Yates said as the Tigers shot 17 of 37.

''That's a high-quality Park team and I felt we defended them well.''

Bonar's prolifics gave Park fits. She connected on a half-dozen first-half 3s as Shadyside took a 31-28 lead to the locker room.

The Tigers mounted second-half leads as high as nine points, though Park, led by Emily Puskarich, remained in contention.

A 42-35 leader after three quarters, Shadyside visited the foul line early and often down the stretch, converting 10 of 20 in the final 5 minutes.

Junior Hayley Holenka, limited to four points through three quarters, scored 11 at crunch time, including a running bank shot in the lane to help keep Park at bay.

Tigers senior Brooke Meintel cashed in only one field goal but worked the paint to land a game-leading 12 rebounds. Sophomore Toni Andes, meanwhile, contributed a pair of 3s.

Puskarich topped Park with 23 points. Junior guard Haley Robb added 17 points.

"(This) was a great atmosphere to play in and our girls worked hard. But give Shadyside credit. Karli Bonar is an excellent shooter and she got away from us too many times," Dailer said.

Puskarich nabbed eight rebounds and senior Krista Crawshaw snared seven. Park totaled 27 boards and was charged with 13 turnovers. The hosts were guilty of 16 giveaways.
