Marshall Fair Preparations Start

January 15, 2012
Jim Cochran , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

With January having reached the mid-way point, members of the Marshall County Fair Board will begin working in earnest on the 2012 version of the Marshall County Fair which will be held July 22-28 at the Marshall County Fairgrounds.

The board will be planning some improvements to the fairgrounds, this after receiving from the different superintendents' needs in each area.

One of the proposed improvements is that of new rrena, while a determination will be made on the future use of the site of the former Sale Barn.

Campground forms will be sent out on March 1, with some 100 camper units expected by those individuals who reside at the fairgrounds during the Fair Week.

Since many Marshall County residents have been assigned different addresses since last year, it is important for those with new addresses to send this information to Marshall County Fair, P.O. Box 52, Moundsville, 26041 if they are expecting mail from the fair.

Board president Beth Bertram said that a time change involving the release of exhibits and campers will be taking place. She said, "Due to safety concerns and the public wishes to see the exhibits on Saturday night, only market animals will be released on Saturday night, thus all other exhibits and campers will be released on Sunday."

Bertram explained, "Congestion of trucks and trailers on the fair roads would create a hazard if all animals were released on Saturday night."

While on the subject of the fairgrounds, a gun show will be held there Jan. 21-22, with tables still available and the public invited to attend. A full kitchen will be available both days, featuring a breakfast special both days.

For further information on events at the fairgrounds visit the website at Marshallcountyfair.net.

Marshall County 4-H and FFA members are looking forward to summer and the Marshall County Fair, where they will exhibit the projects they have been working on this year.

Various groups have established scholarship funds to benefit further education opportunities for these youth. The 4-H and FFA Livestock Club have for more than 60 years provided great experiences for these members, but have provided thousands of dollars in scholarships funded mainly by the community.

The youths must fill out applications and be interviewed by a panel selected for their interest in the future of the members. In 2011 these scholarships were valued at $3,000.

The Marshall County Livestock Club will be holding their annual steak fry on Jan. 28 at the Chesapeake Energy Building at the Marshall County Fairgrounds.

Tickets are available at Accessories LTD on First Street, or by calling either 304-639-2721 or 304-845-7549.

Another annual steak fry, the Jim "Dead Eye" Morris Wrestling event, will be taking place on Feb. 18 at the Training Center within the walls of the former West Virginia Penitentiary.

The number of persons filing for county offices during the past week was described as "very low" by officials in the county clerk's office.

As of Friday morning, seven persons had filed. Three are seeking magistrate posts. They are William D. Anderson, Mark A. Kerwood and David McLaughlin. One person, Jeffrey Cramer, has filed for prosecutor. One, Kevin Cecil, has filed for sheriff and one, Lori Kestner, has filed for the board of education. David McCardle has filed for conservation district supervisor.

In the city of Cameron, no one has filed for any of the four seats, three council (one from each ward) and mayor.

In the city of Glen Dale, no one has filed for any of five seats, three council, mayor and recorder. However, the incumbents have all requested election forms.

In Benwood, four current members of city government, mayor Edward M. Kuca, Jr., council members Charles Terry (first ward), John Kazemka (second ward) and Lorie Longwell (third ward) have filed for re-election, along with Carl Richter (third ward).
