President Barack Obama says he wants the federal government to crack down on institutions of higher learning that charge outrageous tuitions and fees. That may well bring a smile to the faces of the faculty, staff - and students - at West Liberty University.
Like many other colleges and universities, WLU has had to increase tuition and fees during recent years. But in comparison to others, WLU's rates remain very low - at one-fourth or even one-fifth of amounts charged at some institutions.
One reward for that has been success in attracting students and their parents who want good value for their higher education dollars. WLU President Robin Capehart revealed last week the local university has attracted 11.3 percent more applicants for the fall 2012 semester than it had a year ago.
Our area is blessed with several institutions of higher learning that offer good value - setting a great example for others.
