WJU, West Lib Both Pass 100

WHEELING - Wheeling Jesuit put on a shooting clinic at the Alma Grace McDonough Center en route to a 105-80 dismantling of the visiting University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

''We beat a well -coached team and our guys executed the game plan,'' Wheeling Jesuit coach Danny Sancomb said. ''It was a great all-around team effort. We had outstanding performances from our starters and our bench.''

The red-hot Cardinals (15-6 overall, 11-4 WVC) shot 61.9 percent from beyond the arc with 13 first-half 3-pointers. Not only were the Cardinals hot from deep, they shot a staggering 64.9 percent from the floor, building a 61-35 halftime lead without attempting a foul shot.

Wheeling Jesuit finished the evening shooting 65 percent from the field and 62 percent behind the arc. Recardo Gaddy led all Cardinals players with 19 points, while Steve Catich dropped 18. Obi Ukwuoma and Marquis Moore each had 12, while Joe Prati and Pete Brogdon led off the bench with 16 and nine, respectively.

Moore completed a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds as the Cardinals held a 37-29 advantage on the glass.

Pitt-Johnstown falls to 12-9 overall and 10-6 in the WVC.

West Liberty 134

Ohio Valley 81

WEST LIBERTY - The No. 2-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team buried its 19th consecutive opponent with another 3-point blizzard as the Hilltoppers hammered Ohio Valley.

West Liberty (21-1, 16-0) rained in 14 3-pointers while making nearly 60 percent of its shots (52 of 90, .578) from the floor in running away from the road-weary Fighting Scots (6-14, 6-11).

Alex Falk led six double-figure scorers for the hosts with 29 points 23 of them coming in the first half. Cedric Harris added 22 points while Keene Cockburn came off the bench with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.

Mike Lopez finished with a WLU career-high 16 points while C.J. Hester weighed in with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his eight double-double of the year. Jeff Yunetz rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Women

Pitt-Johnstown 73 Wheeling Jesuit 55

WHEELING - Freshman Kaitlyn Fratz scored 22 points, while classmate Kelsey Sleighter had 16 as Pitt-Johnstown used a big first-half run as the catalyst for the victory.

The Mountain Cats improved to 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the WVC, while the Cardinals dropped to 4-15 overall and 1-14 in conference play.

Pitt-Johnstown turned a slim 18-12 lead into a 45-26 halftime advantage thanks to its bench, which outscored WJU 20-3 in the first half.

Cassy Sanderson paced the Cardinals with 16 points, including 13 in the second half. Lucy DeFruscio added 12 points, while Erica Schultz had 10 points and a team-high 11 boards.

West Liberty 66

Ohio Valley 49

WEST LIBERTY - The West Liberty University women's basketball team picked up its third win in the last four games, rolling to a victory against Ohio Valley University at the ASRC.

Although the game was less than an artistic success at times, Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (12-9, 9-6) led wire-to-wire in beating the Fighting Scots (10-13, 6-11) for the 31st straight time while strengthening their hold on a spot in the top half of the WVIAC standings.

Kayla Ayers drained a season-high six 3-point field goals and finished with a game-high 20 points. Hillary Southworth added 13 points and seven rebounds while Emily Blevins chipped in with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Erica Hershberger's game-high six assists left her just 8 shy of becoming the 13th Hilltopper to reach 300 career assists.
