KINDER, John Campbell, 88, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Wheeling Hospital.
He was born March 23, 1923 at Brookside, OH a son of the late Gordon Dyche and Charlotte Duncan Kinder.
John was a former partner in the Kinder, Kinder and Kinder Law Firm of Martins Ferry and St. Clairsville.
John attended Linsly Institute and was a graduate of The Gilman School of Baltimore, MD, where he was the state wrestling champion. He then was a graduate of Princeton University and later the University of Virginia Law School where he a member of the Raven Society and the Law Review. He was a member of Belmont Hills Country Club and the Belmont County Bar Association.
He was a WWII Army veteran serving in the Philippines and later with the occupation forces in Japan.
During John's distinguished career he led the fight against unregulated strip mining. He also discovered Dysart Woods in Belmont County having it placed in the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy under care of Ohio University.
John was preceded in death by his siblings: Margaret Kinder Paull, George Duncan Kinder and Gordon Thomas Kinder.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years Harriet Whitaker Kinder; his sons, Gordon Dyche Kinder III, Bellingham, WA, and Duncan Campbell Kinder and his daughter, Elizabeth Hall Whitaker Kinder. both of St. Clairsville.
Friends will be received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday March 13, 2012 at the Beck-Altmeyer Funeral Home and Crematory, 204 W. Main St., St. Clairsville, OH.
Friends will then be received from 9:30 a.m. until the time of John's funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 1410 Chapline St., Wheeling, WV with the Rev. Fr. Mark Seitz officiating.
Interment will follow at Union Cemetery St. Clairsville.
