Performing Arts Center A Gem

March 12, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Throughout much of our region, the focus on improving high school life for students in public schools revolves around athletics. That's fine, as sports can play an important role in a youngster's development, but life is more than a game. That's something the folks in Ohio County Schools have come to understand.

Today, the school system unveils its $10 million J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center. The 1,200-seat center, located at Wheeling Park High School, is impressive. Former School Superintendent Lawrence Miller advocated for its construction.

Among its features are state-of-the-art electronics and a set shop for students to learn the behind-the-scenes operations of a theater. We encourage all Wheeling Park students to take advantage of what the center offers, as it will provide them both educational and real-world experiences they otherwise might not receive.

An open house at the performing arts center is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. today. We ask all Ohio County residents to attend and see what a true gem has been created for local students.
