WEIRTON - City police confirmed an officer shot and killed a man Tuesday in a downtown shopping plaza.

Weirton Police Chief Bruce Marshall said the man was shot by a police officer while allegedly committing a felony at about 5:30 a.m. along the 4000 block of Main Street near the intersection of Washington Street. He said the man, whose identity was not released Tuesday, was involved in an armed robbery around 4 a.m. at the Sunoco gas station on Three Springs Drive.

Police had the intersection of Main and Washington streets - near Papa John's, Misty Cove Laundry Mat and Gumby's - blocked off to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

"The investigation has been turned over to the State Police due to one of our officers being involved in the shooting," Marshall said.

The police chief said the body of the suspect has been turned over to the Brooke County Medical Examiner's Office, which likely will send it to Morgantown to obtain an autopsy.
