More than a dozen pickup trucks lined the Wheeling Island Marina parking lot Thursday morning as Ohio County residents waited their turn to take advantage of the first of 11 Ohio County Spring Cleanup dates.
Ohio County Solid Waste Authority Executive Director Tammy Bonar said it is important that Spring Cleanup participants follow the rules and be prepared to show proof of Ohio County residency. She said each site will be continuously monitored by either city employees or town and village volunteers.
According to one witness at the Wheeling Island Marina on Thursday, when a man showed up to scavenge through the dump site, he was quickly asked to leave the area by Wheeling police officers. No other problems were reported.

Residents line up at Wheeling Island Marina on Thursday to take advantage of Ohio County’s annual spring Cleanup.
Bonar said television and computer monitors are not accepted at Spring Cleanup sites, among a number of other items including: tires, car batteries, large appliances, motor oil, paint and any other potentially hazardous material. The service is for residential use only, and is not intended for businesses or industry. Residents are asked not to drop off items if Dumpsters are not present, and no scavenging is permitting.
She said the county will be scheduling a date in August for an "Electronics Collection Day," in which Ohio County residents will be able to drop off items like televisions and computer monitors. She said officials have to hire a specific contractor handle those types of items, as they are not allowed to be disposed of at area landfills.
Russell Jebbia, Wheeling Public Works director, said the city helps the county with the annual cleanup project by providing a city-operated backhoe at each Dumpster site. The backhoe is used to compact the discarded items inside the Dumpsters.
