Mothers, grandmothers, daughters, aunts and friends can celebrate Mother's Day and commemorate a special day together by creating beautiful pieces of art glass at Oglebay Institute's Glass Museum or painting their own pottery at OI's Stifel Fine Arts Center.
Glass Making
Special Mother's Day glassmaking workshops will be held throughout the day Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13, at the Glass Museum Studio, located in the Carriage House Glass Center in Oglebay Park.
The program includes a 90-minute, step-by-step session with an experienced glassworker. Groups of up to four people will create at least one piece of one-of-a-kind art glass. Participants can choose from hearts, candy kiss charms for a necklace, paperweights and other objects. More pieces can be made if time allows.
The cost of the workshop is reduced for OI members. Workshops are available at these times: 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Advanced reservations are required and can be made by calling 304-242-7272.
Paint Your Own Pottery
Special opportunities to paint your own pottery take place Saturday, May 5, at Stifel Fine Arts Center, 1330 National Road, Wheeling. Guests can spend a creative afternoon creating personalized, heart-warming gifts for Mother's Day by choosing from a variety of ceramic mugs, plates and bowls that can be painted or glazed. Pieces must be left at Stifel Center, where staff members will fire finished pieces in kilns so they are not only beautiful but also functional.
Participants can stop by Stifel Fine Arts Center to paint their own pottery between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5. Pieces are available in a range of prices and will be available for pick-up between Wednesday and Saturday, May 9-12. For more information, call 304-242-7700.
