An event last Thursday in Annapolis, Md., may affect West Virginians more severely than anything that happened in our state that day.
Maryland's Video Lottery Facility Location Commission approved a license for a new gambling casino at Rocky Gap State Park in Allegany County. The park is within easy driving distance of many Marylanders, as well as millions of others in West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Beyond any doubt, the casino and others planned for Maryland will cut into gambling revenue in West Virginia. So will new casinos under way in Ohio.
West Virginians have been lucky thus far. Revenue from legalized gambling has held fairly steady. That is about to change - and plans need to be made to cope with the drop in revenue.
