An inflatable space walk, a balloon artist and painting were just a few of the activities area children had a chance to enjoy Friday during the First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union's "Cool Kids Fiesta Fun Day," held at Sonneborn Shelter near Wheeling Park High School.

Friday's event was free to the public and was the last of four "Fiesta Fun Day" picnics held around the Ohio Valley this week. The credit union also hosted picnics in Chester, Steubenville and Weirton.

"It's just to give back to the community. ... It's an annual event now which just keeps growing," said Tom Modra, office manager for the credit union's Wheeling branch, noting this was the seventh or eighth year for the event.

Wheeling Police Officer Sara Dent and 5-year-old Emma Weekley of Wheeling play a tug-of-war game with Dent’s trained police K-9, “Apollo,” during the First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union’s “Cool Kids Fiesta Fun Day” at Sonneborn Shelter near Wheeling Park High School on Friday afternoon. Dent was on hand to offer safety information about the police dog’s training.

Modra said the Wheeling police and fire departments were represented at the picnic, providing information on safety. While K-9 officers gave various demonstrations for the children, fire department members offered fire safety demonstrations with the department's new Fire Safety House.

"Kids always like to see the (police) dogs," Modra added.

Many children walked with their parents between the activities at the picnic site wearing colorful sombreros.

Others enjoyed a free hot dog or cold drink in the shade of the shelter.
