Among events planned in observance of West Virginia Day are recreational and educational activities at the Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale. Now a professionally managed treat for history buffs, the site was merely an old, dilapidated house just a few years ago.
But visionaries in the Marshall County Historical Society saw great possibilities in the property. About a decade ago, through the Cockayne Historic Preservation Project, they set to work to transform it from a gem in the rough to what it is today - a beautiful, fascinating attraction not just for local residents, but for people from throughout our region.
Grants from government, businesses and organizations have been utilized wisely to preserve and restore the farmstead. But without the informed enthusiasm and hard work of local volunteers, including many students, the project would never have gotten off the ground.
Thanks to them, the Cockayne Farmstead is, as it is billed, "A Journey Through Time." Their foresight and dedication merits high commendation.
