The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WHEELING -Entering its 11th year, the Wheeling Heritage Port Sternwheel Festival offers area residents the opportunity to see the sternwheels up close.

Scheduled this year for Sept. 13-15 at the city's Heritage Port, the theme is "Return to the River." The festival is known for bringing sternwheel boats to Wheeling for display.

The Wheeling Heritage Port Sternwheel Festival also offers a variety of musical entertainment and food throughout the festival, according to organizers.

The Wheeling Heritage Port Sternwheel Foundation was incorporated by the state of West Virginia in March 2002 to organize and manage the Wheeling Heritage Port Sternwheel Festival - an annual event which takes place in mid-September.

This event is sanctioned by the American Sternwheel Association, an organization dedicated to the support and promotion of sternwheel vessels. The Wheeling event is patterned after a number of other sternwheel festivals, which take place each summer up and down the Ohio River.

Along with the festival, on Saturday, Sept. 15, there is the always popular "Anything that Floats Race" that launches from Martins Ferry. The event begins at 11 a.m.
