Walking across the stage at the J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center Thursday, more than 200 Ohio County Schools students collected about $77,000 worth of Stifel Award money.
Students in grades 5-12 typically do not collect paychecks for their academic work. However, thanks to 1979 Wheeling Hall of Fame enshrinee George E. Stifel, children who excel in the school district are able to gain money for their efforts.
"We recognize the academic excellence of our students as much and as often as we can, and the Stifel Awards is one of the best examples," said Ohio County Schools Deputy Superintendent Dianna Vargo regarding the ceremony at Wheeling Park High School. "It is a great tradition, and we look forward to it every year."

Born in Wheeling in 1849, Stifel was the owner and operator of Stifel Department Store in downtown Wheeling. Stifel Prize trustees Joan Stamp, Diane Crowl and Paula McClure - all descendants of Stifel - presented checks to the students.
"It's a wonderful prize for a wonderful achievement," Vargo added. "I can't say enough about the trustees and how much we appreciate them recognizing the students for their excellent academic efforts."
To be eligible for a Stifel Award, a student must be enrolled full-time in Ohio County Schools for the entire school year, be an American citizen and resident of Ohio County, have earned a current year grade point average of 3.5 or higher and scored in the "distinguished" category in reading/language arts or math on the prior year's WESTEST.
