For six weeks this summer Laughlin Memorial Chapel in Wheeling is hosting two literacy-rich summer programs for local youth.
Laughlin Chapel Summer Jam and Energy Express are two separate free summer programs that offer a reading curriculum in a supportive, nurturing and fun environment, said Rev. Marci Allen, executive director of Laughlin Chapel, located at 129 18th St., Wheeling.
Energy Express is a reading curriculum for children in grades kindergarten through second grade which is sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service.

The program is wrapped within the chapel's Summer Jam program, Allen said.
"It is a reading curriculum ... to increase their reading ability," said Allen.
Summer Jam is for children in grades 3-8 who are encouraged to appreciate reading, the arts, drama, gardening and community service, among other fun activities.
Allen said both programs involve reading activities throughout the morning hours, while the children get to enjoy more fun activities during the afternoon. Some of the activities include: arts and crafts, drama and cooking classes, and swimming at a local park.
"It's mainly to have an enjoyable summer ... and mainly to increase their reading skills," said Allen.
She said following breakfast the children start each day by singing a few songs and listening to a guest reader which is followed by various reading and computer activities in a classroom setting.
"Because we're an open site, any child under 18 is welcome to come eat here for free of charge," Allen said, noting they offer free breakfast and lunch daily.
The camp which currently has 85 children enrolled will conclude July 27. For more information, call 304-232-2630.
