HANNAH, Martha Ann Mitchell, 80, of Wheeling, WV, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 in Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheeling.
She was born December 23, 1931 in Sistersville, WV, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mildred Myers Mitchell.
Martha was a retired employee of Reynolds Memorial Hospital and a member of the Ohio Valley General Hospital Alumni Association for 50 years, after which she became an honorary member.
She became a resident of Glen Dale, WV, when she was in the sixth grade, and graduated from Moundsville High School in 1949, where she played saxophone in the band. She then attended OVGH Nursing School from 1949-1952. Martha received her bachelor's degree from California University of Pennsylvania.
Martha's career in nursing included working in surgery and serving as a clinical instructor. She was the OR supervisor at Bellaire Hospital for six months; at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, she served as Assistant Director of Nursing, QA and Infection Control nurse from 1975-1988. In 1984, she attended a two-week training period with the CDC in Atlanta, GA.
In 1988, Martha worked in Saudi Arabia, where she served as Director and instructor in Infection Control & QA for 19 months at King Khalid Eye Hospital. She returned in 1993 for an additional six months. She also served as a board member of the Upper Ohio Valley Family Service.
Locally, she was employed by Dr. Kenneth Allen of Glen Dale, the Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley, and the Wheeling Clinic as a relief office nurse, PRN, and as a PRN nurse for Dr. Vawter. She retired after 55 years in nursing. Martha was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hannah; three sisters, Jane, Mary and Helen; and a brother, Tommy.
Surviving are a son, Marc Hannah (Heidi); two daughters, Debbie Rodgers (Rick) and Becky Carcione (Brian); two brothers, Franklin Mitchell (Diana) and Pete Mitchell (Sylvia); a sister, Carolyn Beatson (Stuart); six grandchildren, Kye, Braley, Nick, Noelle, Marie and Lizzy; a significant companion, Charles Sine; and a neighbor and special friend, Roberta Lewicki.
At Martha's request, her body was donated to WVU Human Gift Registry. A celebration of Martha's life will be held at First Christian Church, 1343 National Road, Wheeling, on Thursday, June 28, 2012 with a social gathering at 5 p.m. and a memorial service at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Hardway officiating.
