Honoring, Helping Those in Uniform

June 28, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

We Americans have much to celebrate next Wednesday, on Independence Day. For more than two centuries, we as a nation have commemorated July 4, 1776 as the beginning of a daring, wonderful experiment in liberty as the foundation of government.

But the freedoms we enjoy would have been erased long ago, were it not for the courageous, dedicated men and women who serve us in the military.

This year, as has been the case for nearly a decade, a special "Support Our Troops" event will be an important part of the pre-Independence Day weekend. From 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Cabela's at The Highlands in Ohio County will be the site of two programs, "Honor Our Military" and "Operation Beat the Heat."

The annual events began under the auspices of the internationally recognized Boatsie's Boxes program in Wheeling. Gail Van Vranken, who founded Boatsie's Boxes to help those serving in the military, said activities Saturday will be intended to do just that, while also honoring those in the armed services.

It is an excellent, appropriate way to kick off Independence Day festivities. If you can, we encourage you to participate.
