VEHAR, Anne (Zugaro), 98, of Powhatan Point, OH, passed away following a long illness on June 30, 2012, at the Rose Lane Nursing Home, Massillon, OH, where she moved earlier this year from the Shadyside Care Center to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Born in Bradley, OH, on April 30, 1914, Anne moved to Powhatan in 1923, where she met her husband of 63 years, the late August "Britches" Vehar. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Ben and Domenica (Pietrangelo) Zugaro, an infant child, brothers, Virgil (Ann) Volpe, Tony (Jean) Volpe, and Sam (Frances) Zugaro, and sisters, Helen (John) Pompili, Mary Volpe, Ethel Zugaro, and Velma (Victor) Buff.
Anne was valedictorian of her 1933 graduating class at Powhatan High School and is remembered fondly by many Powhatan alumni for her famous spaghetti, lasagna, chili, and ham salad that they enjoyed during lunches at the Wooden Shoe Bar and Grill, from the Belmont Grocery, where she worked for many years for her parents and siblings, or at many family and friends' picnics. Correctly referred to by her cousin, Tony Pietrangelo, as the "Angel of the family," she was generous, loving - and loved by many - hard-working, loyal, wise, and compassionate. Described even by those who only recently met her, including her physical therapist, as a "determined little lady," if she had joined the service, she could have been a successful and effective sergeant.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, August Randall and Melissa Ann Vehar, Jackson Township (Canton), OH, her daughter and son-in- law, Patsy Ann and Gust Christ Malavite, Jr., East Sparta, OH, and three grandsons, Gust "Gussy" Malavite, III, East Sparta, and Christopher and Matthew Rivera, both of Jackson Township, OH, and many nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends, including many staff and residents at the Shadyside Care Center, where she and her husband resided for five years, and her new friends at Rose Lane.
The family wishes to thank the staff at both nursing homes for their loving and compassionate care and friendship.
Calling hours will be from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home, 4041 Cleveland Avenue South, Canton, OH (330-484-2525) and from 4-8 pm on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at the Bauknecht- Altmeyer Funeral Home, 186 Main Street, Powhatan Point, Ohio (740-795-5451.) Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Funeral Home in Powhatan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Presbyterian Church, Powhatan Point, OH, where Ann was a member.
