Weirton police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after a couple was found dead Monday.

Dispatchers at Hancock County and Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad involved with the call said the incident was reported just before 9 p.m. at 260 Seneca St., the home of Luke and Toni Shields.

WAARS officials said the call came in from a third party who gave the address without much detail of the incident. Crews were dispatched for "an unknown man down" and remained on scene until about 1:30 a.m.

Weirton Police Chief Bruce Marshall said Shields, a male in his mid-30s, and his wife had a history of domestic violence reported at the residence.

Upon conducting the initial investigation, Marshall said it was clear it was a case of murder-suicide.

"He killed her and then killed himself," said Marshall.

Marshall said police spent the evening gathering evidence at the scene, which indicated the murder and suicide were committed with a firearm.

While no other details were released, he said the incident is still under investigation.
