LYNN, William John "Jack," 92, of Wellsburg, WV, formerly of Penn Hills, PA, passed away July 20, 2012.
Jack was born on May 29, 1920 in Pittsburgh PA. He was the son of the late Hugh and Bessie Carlson Lynn.
Jack won City of Pittsburgh and PA High School Gymnastics Championships in horizontal bar and rings.
In 1942, Jack joined the U.S. Army and was a member of the 210 MP Co. attached to the 5th Engineer Special Brigade. They ran the Omaha beach at 6 a.m. on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The unit suffered grievous casualties and received among other unit citations, the Croix de Guerre. The 210 MP Co. was singled out for a Presidential Unit Citation. A monument overlooking Omaha beach now commemorates the sacrifices of the 5th Engineer Special Brigade and its Croix de Guerre.
Jack became an engineer and designer for the Pittsburgh Stage Equipment, Inc. He was a member of the Wellsburg Lion's Club.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Robert, and Norman Lynn, a sister, Grace Davis, several infant brothers and sisters, and his loving wife, Sarah G. Lynn.
Jack is survived by his son William H. Lynn and daughter-in-law Carol J Lynn of Wellsburg, two sisters, JoAnn Grogan of Ohio and Carol Christman of Pennsylvania, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, July 23, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again Tuesday, July 24, 2012 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Chambers Funeral Home, 1030 Main Street, Wellsburg, WV, with the Reverend Samuel Gibb, officiating. Interment with full military honors by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad will follow in Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV.
