We in the Ohio Valley are blessed to enjoy a variety of festivals and celebrations that remind us of our heritage as a melting pot of nationalities and cultures. The biggest and best - hands down - is the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival.
This marks the event's 30th year, and it will be in progress through Sunday in downtown Wheeling.
Most area residents probably anticipate the festival as a very good time to be had by all, and it certainly is that. An impressive slate of entertainment, educational and recreational events has been scheduled by festival Chairman Robert Gaudio and others on the event committee.
And yes, there's the food - a seemingly endless variety of delicious edibles.
But the festival is much more than a time to have fun. Again, it shows off the Italian heritage of which so many area residents are justly proud. Each year the festival committee recognizes a distinguished local resident as Italian-American of the Year. And the committee provides scholarships - 14 of them this year - to deserving young people.
Hard-working volunteers and dedicated sponsors are necessary to make any special event a success. In that regard, the Italian Heritage Festival has been blessed for many years. Congratulations to all involved for another great event.
