The Ohio County Board of Education unanimously approved hiring Rich McCardle as the new principal at Ritchie Elementary School during a special meeting Friday.
McCardle previously served as assistant principal at Wheeling Park High School. He is filling the void created when former Ritchie principal Raquel Welch accepted the same position at Bridge Street Middle School on Monday.
"I can't say enough about Ohio County Schools, I've been here a long time," said McCardle, a 22-year employee of the school system.

For the past seven years, McCardle directed the career and technical program at Wheeling Park.
Board members also unanimously approved hiring speech/language pathologist Emily Miller and special education teacher Melinda Yoho.
Human Resources Director John Jorden announced that, as of Friday, all of the employees placed on the transfer list and all but one placed on the reduction in force list had been assigned positions for the upcoming school year.
Jorden said employees are routinely brought back as additional federal funding becomes available near the start of the school year.
"Right now, at this point, all the transfers are back and there's only one person left on the reduction in force list," he noted.
