For years, Wheeling officials have worked with various owners of the old Rogers Hotel, on 14th Street, in efforts to have the structure either renovated or razed.
The Rogers is in deplorable shape. It is both a safety and health hazard. Yet the current owner, an Akron, Ohio, man, insists he will make repairs in the hope of opening a business in the building.
City building code enforcement officer Tom Wilson told our reporter officials are attempting to work with the owner. They should. Where feasible, old buildings should be updated and reused.
But officials also are right to insist on noticeable progress at the hotel. If that cannot be demonstrated, the city should proceed with a plan to have the building removed.
