One of our area's most successful events benefitting a good cause is the annual Debbie Green Memorial 5K Run/Walk, staged to fight one of humankind's most dreaded diseases. Now in its 15th year, the program has provided thousands of dollars to battle leukemia and has helped many of its victims.
Local resident Ron Green established and named the event in memory of his sister, who lost her battle against the disease in 1972. Green's vision in initiating the event and his dedication in improving it, year after year, truly are an inspiration.
So, for that matter, are the scores of volunteers and sponsors, along with the hundreds of participants who view the Debbie Green races as must-do activities each year.
This year's 5K and "Green Mile" races will be staged at the Heritage Port in Wheeling on Friday and Saturday. Again this year, the "Race for a Reason" promises to feature fun and competition for all ages -along with an opportunity to help a great cause.
