One of the most imposing buildings in Wheeling is the RG Steel headquarters building at 1134 Market Street. With the company's bankruptcy filing, the structure soon may be added to the long list of vacant businesses in the city's downtown area.
Through a bidding process, much of RG Steel's local property was purchased this week. The Market Street facility, for decades home to the old Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., was not sold, however. That leaves its future uncertain and, again, may add to the deterioration of downtown Wheeling.
But Wheeling remains an attractive place for some types of development. It is simply a matter of matching the old Wheeling-Pitt building to the right buyer - and perhaps finding some way for government to "sweeten" such a deal.
City, regional and state economic development officials should be looking into just such action, so the building can continue being an asset to downtown Wheeling.
