ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Presumed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will make a campaign stop in southeast Ohio next week, and Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, will accompany him, the campaign said Monday.

Chris Maloney, Romney's campaign spokesman in Ohio, said Romney will make a stop somewhere in Southeast Ohio on Aug. 14. The time and location have yet to be determined.

Romney starts a campaign tour this week that takes him to Virginia, North Carolina and Florida before ending with multiple stops in Ohio, Maloney added.

Portman is among those pundits believe Romney is considering as a vice presidential running mate, and his appearance with Romney in Ohio should create interest, Maloney added.

Romney is expected to announce his decision regarding a running mate soon - in time for the Republican National Convention, which takes place Aug. 27-30 in Tampa.

It is presumed Romney will win the Republican nomination for president following a vote of delegates at the convention. He will speak during the convention, as will his running mate.

Portman was elected senator in 2010 but has a long history in Washington, D.C. He was first elected to Congress in 1992 but left that post in 2005 after being named U.S. trade representative under former President George W. Bush.

In 2006, he became director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Romney is a former governor of Massachusetts, a businessman and served as CEO of the 2002 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.

He will face President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 general election.
