ST. CLAIRSVILLE - A man was struck and killed by a vehicle that left the scene early today along U.S. 40 at North Ebbert Road near St. Clairsville.
The identity of the victim had not been released at press time pending notification of family members.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Belmont County Sheriff's Department received a call at around 6 a.m. today regarding a body lying on the side of the road near North Ebbert Road. Deputies and state troopers responded and found the man deceased along the road.
Troopers said it was apparent that the victim had been struck by a motor vehicle which then left the scene.
Emergency personnel from Cumberland Trail Fire Department also responded to the crash scene. A crash reconstructionist and investigators from the Patrol's Cambridge District Headquarters responded to the scene to assist in processing evidence.
Belmont County Coronor Troy Balgo and his assistant Jack Morgan were called and responded to the site of the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
