SHELEK, Ercella Hixenbaugh

SHELEK, Ercella Hixenbaugh, 84, of Wheeling, WV, died Friday, August 10, 2012 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, surrounded by family.

She was born September 12, 1927, to the late Ercell and Margaret Hixenbaugh, and was a 1945 graduate of Wheeling High School. She retired from The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, after 51-years.

An avid Pirate fan who never waivered. She was a former board member of the Wheeling Island Community Association. She helped found the Blessed Trinity Bingo which supported its parish grade school, and she was a member of the Genealogy Club at the Ohio County Public Library. She was a devoted reader of a multitude of authors. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence B. "Bert" Shelek Sr.

She is survived by one son, C. "Bert" Shelek Jr., four daughters, Jan (Jack) Armstrong, Mary Lou (Tom) Guckert, Leslie (Larry) Manning and Lynne Shelek, all of Wheeling; one sister, Margaret Ann Schenerlein of Wheeling; seven grandchildren, Kurt (Sissy) McLaughlin, Deanna Manning, Jacob (Adrianne) Manning, Matthew Shelek, Brad Guckert (Kitt Bandi), Megan (Brandon) Becker and Derek Armstrong; four great grandchildren, Ellie and Sarah Manning, Seth and Sydney McLaughlin, three nieces, Sundae (Ron) Fassig, Kim Wilds, Linda Hissom and companion Fluffy.

She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph Church.

Family and friends will be received for the memorial gathering from 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling, WV, with Msgr. Kevin Quirk as celebrant.

Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
