STEUBENVILLE - Steubenville police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department are investigating the reported sexual assault of a juvenile female, a city official confirmed on Monday.
According to a police report, two individuals arrived at the Steubenville police station at 1:40 a.m. Aug. 14 to report a sexual assault involving their daughter. An officer took information and referred the individuals to the department's juvenile division, the report states.
Steubenville Law Director S. Gary Repella confirmed Monday that city police and the sheriff's department are investigating the matter, but he offered no additional comment.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla and Prosecutor Jane Hanlin did not return calls seeking comment Monday.
Steubenville Police Chief William A. McCafferty directed calls to Repella on Monday.
Steubenville Schools Superintendent Michael McVey said he has not been notified of any such investigation and education officials are focused on the first day of classes Wednesday.
