The mother of a 14-year-old girl came to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department on Monday to report the girl was raped in April, said Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
Abdalla said the girl told her mother Sunday about the alleged rape.
According to Abdalla, the girl alleges she was raped in Steubenville. The sheriff referred the mother to the Steubenville Police Department, because the alleged crime occurred within the city limits.
Steubenville Police Chief William McCafferty said the girl and her mother were expected to be interviewed Tuesday by a detective in the juvenile division.
The chief said the mother received a message that her daughter was the victim of a sexual assault.
