A Steubenville police juvenile detective interviewed a 14-year-old girl and her mother Tuesday in the investigation of an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the city in April.

The girl and her mother went to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department on Sunday and were referred to city police because the alleged assault was reported to have occurred within city limits.

Police Chief William McCafferty said the juvenile detective interviewed the girl and her mother. He said the juvenile detective is trained in interviewing child sexual assault victims.

McCafferty said the next step is to find witnesses who were at the home where the alleged sexual assault took place. He is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the chief's office at 740-283-6000, ext. 2302, or the juvenile division at ext. 2600.
