Sept. 11 Service to Take Place at City War Memorial

TORONTO - Services marking the terrorist attacks on Washington, D.C., and New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, have been set for 7 p.m. Tuesday centered around the Toronto's war memorial near the gazebo commons.

The candlelight service hosted by Toronto American Legion Post 86 will commemorate the day and feature speakers, songs and the lighting of memorial candles.

The master of ceremonies will be David Rhodes, first vice commander of the American Legion. The Rev. Raul Diaz, pastor of Toronto Cornerstone Church, will deliver the invocation, after which Jefferson County Commissioner Tom Graham will sing the national anthem.

Guest speakers will include Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla and Clark Crago, chief of operations at the TEMS Joint Ambulance Service.

City resident Beth Warren will sing "Amazing Grace," after which Frank McEwen, city fire chief, will speak. Graham will follow, singing "America the Beautiful." State Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, also will speak.

Graham then will perform "God Bless the USA," after which the lighting of candles will take place under the supervision of Robert Cowles, Post 86 chaplain. Diaz will deliver the benediction, and a salute to the dead will be performed by the American Legion Post 86 Firing Squad.
