WEEKEND WRAP: Football Looking Good in Bellaire

Big Reds, Irish have been solid

Some random thoughts ...

Jose Davis' Bellaire Big Reds are off to a 3-0 start following a victory against East Liverpool this past week. Bellaire enters Buckeye 8 play this week. How the Big Reds handle teams like Indian Creek, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville, and Harrison Central?

Jason Merryman has installed a new attitude at St. John and the Fighting Irish is one bad half away from also being 3-0. The Fighting Irish has been looked upon as an ''easy'' victory in recent seasons, but have become a much improved unit under Merryman's watch. St. John faces its toughest task Saturday at Bishop Donahue.

Let's be honest, that can be quite a drive from many of the schools and there were grumblings. But it's time to admit that these schools are good for the conference.

Taking a look at the OVAC football standings, all three schools coming from the Morgantown-area - Morgantown High, University, and Clay-Battelle - are undefeated. The Mohigans lead Class 5A after a pasting of Parkersburg South this week.

These schools have brought competition to the league. And that is a good thing.

Of every game played involving OVAC teams, all but six were decided by two touchdowns or more. Sure, you are going to have those games every week, some teams are just overmatched. But to see this many games decided long before the whistle blows just isn't what we are used to on a regular basis. Here's hoping to more competitive contests this week.
