WHEELING - Ohio Valley Medical Center recently was awarded accreditation from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program, an independent accreditation organization recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This distinction and accreditation comes after an extensive and objective review of the hospitals' quality and safety standards.

Caruso, president and chief executive officer of Ohio Valley Health Services and Education Corp. "In earning this voluntary accreditation, our physicians, employees, and staff have gone above and beyond to further illustrate our commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and our community."
By volunteering to participate in the accreditation process, all clinical and non-clinical departments of OVMC were measured against benchmarks of recognized standards relating to each area of the hospital as compared to hospitals across the country.

The surveys evaluated the hospital on more than 1,000 individual aspects of care, ranging from the physical plant to the way physicians order to clinical care documentation.
"OVMC continues to seek voluntary accreditation programs because it shows the community that we are continually striving to improve our quality of care," said Caruso. "Quality is such an important part of the health care industry today and is a piece of the health care puzzle that we continue to focus on to continue providing the highest quality of care to our patients each and every day."
To earn the HFAP accreditation, OVMC was required to submit to and undergo an unannounced, on-site survey by an HFAP survey team.
"Unannounced surveys require us to be ready at a moment's notice for inspection," said Caruso. "It makes us stay on our toes and assures our community that we are following the accreditation program's Conditions of Participation like we should be. Our employees work very hard to give each of our patients good, quality care; and it is great when a regulator can visit our facilities and validate this for us."
By receiving this HFAP accreditation, OVMC fulfills its mission to provide quality, compassionate and state-of-the-art, family-centered health care.
"OVMC clearly demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care," said Michael Zarski, chief executive officer of HFAP. "We base our decision on federal standards, as well as recognized national standards for patient safety, quality improvement and environmental safety. OVMC met or exceeded standards in every case."
The HFAP is a nonprofit, nationally recognized accreditation organization. It has been accrediting health care facilities for more than 60 years and under Medicare since its inception. Its mission is to advance high quality patient care and safety through objective application of recognized standards.
