Kenneth Taylor

TAYLOR, Kenneth Lee, 92, of Bethesda, MD, formerly of Wheeling, WV., died Thursday, September 27, 2012 after a short illness.

He was born June 14, 1920 in Wheeling, son of Lawrence S. Taylor and Minnie Ryan Taylor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Louise Allcock Taylor and by his sister, Eleanor Taylor Blain.

Mr. Taylor graduated from the former Triadelphia High School in 1938. In 1939 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and spent six years as a Marine and was stationed in Hawaii at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He spent the remainder of World War II as part of the action in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1945, ironically on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day.

Following his military service he attended West Liberty State College and received a Bachelor's degree from West Virginia University in 1949. He moved to the Washington, D.C. area and worked for the National Weather Service, The Department of the Army, and finished his career as a cartographer for the Department of the Navy. Following retirement in 1976, he and Betty enjoyed traveling the world for nearly 30 years. For the past 3 years he and Betty lived in Brighton Gardens, an assisted living community in Bethesda, MD, where they were blessed with many friendships.

Ken is survived by a sister, Floren Taylor Houser of Knoxville, TN, nephews, Wayne Houser and wife, Rebecca of Knoxville, TN, Richard Blain and wife, Sharon of Wellington, FL and Daniel Doman and wife, Rebecca of Beckley, WV, and niece, Joy Doman Fox and husband, Peter of Triadelphia, WV.

Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at the Kepner Funeral Home (304-242-2311), 166 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, Wheeling. Services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Reverend R. Paul Schafer officiating.

Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
