Plenty of big battles on tap for this weekend

We are just past the midway point of the high school football season and things are starting to heat up for teams in the Ohio Valley.

If the season ended today, as many as 15 OVAC schools would be headed for the postseason with a number just on the outside looking in.

Seven of those teams reside in Ohio with Steubenville, St. Clairsville, Martins Ferry, Harrison Central, Shadyside, Steubenville Catholic and Bellaire currently in position to capture playoff berths.

In West Virginia, Wheeling Park, Morgantown, University and Parkersburg South are in the hunt in Class AAA, while Magnolia, Clay-Battelle, Weirton Madonna, Wheeling Central and Bishop Donahue will likely be among the top 16 when the WVSSAC rankings are released on today.

Playoff positioning will be on the line with a big slate of games Friday night as Wheeling Park plays host to Morgantown and Bishop Donahue welcomes Weirton Madonna to Monarch Stadium.

St. Clairsville is a perfect 6-0 following last week's victory against Bellaire and is the No. 1 ranked team in Division IV, Region 15. Martins Ferry (5) and Harrison Central (6) also reside in that region.

Congratulations to Coach Sean Blumette for earning his first victory as head coach at Brooke.

The Bruins edged Point Pleasant on Friday as Brooke tasted victory for the first time this season.

Caldwell went on the road to beat Barnesville for the Redskins' first victory, leaving just three OVAC teams - Weir, Shenandoah, and Hundred - having yet to walk off the field a winner.
