MOUNDSVILLE - When most people think about home cleaning they think of indoor cleaning such as dusting and general pick-up, but exterior home cleaning is something that should be on the list.
John Littleton, manager of Ace Hardware in Moundsville, suggests the exterior of homes be cleaned at least twice a year.
"A good time to clean is in the fall to kill mold and mildew that might have built up during warm and damp days of summer. In the spring the cleaning should be done to remove stains from combustion of wood or coal in a fireplace," he said.

John Littleton, manager of Ace Hardware in Moundsville, shows off a powerwasher his store rents for cleaning home exteriors.
Littleton noted his store has several cleaning products that can be used with a powerwasher to do the job. The store also rents equipment.
"To clean a house properly you will need a good ladder and a powerwasher," he explained. "They work better the closer you are to your work area and with the proper spray tip applied."
He suggests those who have their own powerwashers check the owner's manual for the proper tip. For adjustable power washers they should be set to the strongest setting and care should be taken not to damage the surface being sprayed.
For those not wanting to rent a powerwasher, Littleton said the best alternative would be to put the cleaner in a pump-up garden sprayer, spray down the surface to be cleaned, let it stand for a while, and then wash it off using a garden hose equipped with a sweeper nozzle.
"These nozzles increase the velocity of water on a garden hose. It's not nearly as efficient as a powerwasher," he said, "but it is a lot more economical. Doing it with a sponge and soap and water is just not practical."
