Guarding Against Vote Fraud in W.Va.

October 19, 2012
The Intelligencer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Election fraud is a reality in West Virginia, whether some special interests want to admit it or not. Earlier this year, the sheriff and county clerk of Lincoln County pleaded guilty to ballot fraud in a 2010 election.

It was good, then, to hear that both U.S. attorneys serving our state are undertaking special initiatives to detect fraud in the Nov. 6 election.

U.S. Attorneys William Ihlenfeld of the Northern District and Booth Goodwin of the Southern District have a variety of plans to keep the election clean - or at least catch those who have other ideas.

Good for them. Goodwin's office pursued the Lincoln County case energetically, and that attitude should prevail throughout West Virginia. Anyone caught trying to "steal" an election this year should be punished severely.
